Timothy Moran is an Emmy-winning writer and producer who builds documentaries around complicated, often polarizing central figures.
He recently produced Rafa (Netflix), a portrait of the final year of Rafael Nadal's career made with unprecedented access to the champion and his inner circle, for which he received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary Series. Previously, he received a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing for Chimp Crazy — HBO's most-watched documentary series in four years. Hillary (Hulu), a four-part series about the life of the former First Lady and presidential candidate, premiered at the Sundance and Berlin film festivals, and earned him a Critics Choice Real TV Award and a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary Series.
His other productions include Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence (Hulu), nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for Best New Documentary Series; Tricky Dick (CNN), an all-archival portrait of Richard Nixon and winner of the Cinema Eye Honor for Outstanding Nonfiction Series; and three films for The New York Times Presents (FX/Hulu), including the Primetime Emmy-nominated Controlling Britney Spears and the News & Documentary Emmy-winning Malfunction: The Dressing Down of Janet Jackson. He was co-producer of Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes (HBO), which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, and, as archival producer, shared in the News & Documentary Emmy won by Hostages (HBO).
He is currently completing Carl Sagan: We Are Made of Stardust (National Geographic), a biography of the popular astronomer and science evangelist.
He divides his time between New York, Barcelona, and La Pampa, Argentina.
